Welcome gruesome night owls to Anchorage, Alaska. A place where people don’t care if someone goes missing (literally, no one’s going give a hoot!). A place where Leia Walker tries her hardest to hide from the world, wanting a normal life without anxiety and OCD.
Plot-wise, the main character, Leia Walker, is a naive college student who struggles with OCD and self-image issues. Her bubble bursts when an old friend is back in town and twists Leia’s reality. And when a bloody event proves what Leia is scared to learn-Sophie Gardner-her old high school friend and savior from the bullies, is a vampire.
Forced to run away with Sophie, Leia’s life takes a terrifying turn when vampires and hunters come after them. As in many fantasy worlds, the vampire world has its own set of rules that serve to move the plot forward. These rules weren’t too contrived or distracting – it wasn’t a hard world to grasp, and the pace of the novel thrives from Villimey’s mind.
I’m impressed and pleasantly surprised by how well the story unfolds. Villimey has a pleasant and simple way of introducing the main character and her disabilities or weaknesses. And Leia’s friend, Sophie is a blast, a devil-dressed in human clothes.
As much as this book is known to be a vampire story, to me, it was more so about friendship, humanity, and fighting inner battles as much as fighting dark things which go ‘bump’ in the night.
If you adore the horror genre, or if you like vampires and are getting tired of the same old same old, and the lack of romance, fortunately, makes it way more than a sappy YA novel.
I can not recommend this book highly enough. Nocturnal Blood is a part gripping adventure story, part road trip, part thriller, and part vampire novel with plenty of gore. Where there’s horror, you’ll find Villimey, and if you are traveling in and around Iceland, you will find her too!
