‘Your Name’ Becomes All-Time Best-Selling 2D Animated Movie in China

I don’t normally watch anime films, except Studio Ghibli films, but Makoto Shinkai’s anime film Your Name has made history in the Chinese box office. It is now the best-selling 2-D animated film in China ever. It has earned the equivalent of about $81 million US dollars.

The film tells the story of a teenage girl and boy who find they have suddenly switched bodies. Over the course of the strange experience, they fall in love. The star-crossed lovers deal with many obstacles.

The film had already broken records in China previous to this. It broke the all-time record for most advance tickets sold and also became the fastest film to make it to $100 million yuan (the equivalent of $14 million US dollars). It’s also the highest grossing Japanese film to show in China.

Thanks to the film’s success, it’s theatrical run in China has been extended to February 2. The film will be opening in 92 countries and territories, including the United States early this year.

Are you excited to see this movie. Are you planning to see it? Then let us know?
