Horror movie fans still wondering if a third “28 Days Later” movie will ever happen should remain hopeful…
According to director Danny Boyle, another sequel to the zombie movie 28 Days Later is currently in the works. While promoting his new movie Yesterday, Boyle confirmed the news personally, saying he’s teaming back up with original writer Alex Garland for the third installment.
“Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part,” Boyle said. “It’s properly good. The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all. [Alex is] concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it’s stood in abeyance really, but it’s a you-never-know.”

The original 28 Days Later was first released in the United Kingdom in 2002. In this particular zombie story, the virus is unleashed when a group of animal activists releases infected monkeys from captivity. Just under a month afterward, a bicycle courier named Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens from a coma in a London hospital to find the streets deserted.
He learns quickly enough about the outbreak when he begins encountering vicious zombies, though the soldiers he meets later may prove to be even more dastardly than the infected humans yearning for a taste of his flesh. Ultimately, 28 Days Later grossed $85 million against a budget of $8 million, and is considered to be one of the best zombie movies of all time.

28 Weeks Later would follow in 2007, this time from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. A who’s who of familiar faces from Hollywood appear in the official sequel, including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, and Idris Elba.
The sequel reveals that the infection has been successfully quarantined in Europe, though another outbreak occurs in the safe zone when two children seek their infected mother. While not quite as popular as the original, Weeks was also a hit at the box office, earning $65 million with a budget of $15 million.

The first film actually brought chills to my body. Cold sweaty chills that only the living dead could bring with them as they’re corpses begin to rise from the depths of the land.
It was unlike any kind of zombie film that Culturedemandsgeeks had seen before. It definitely brought something fresh, cool, and unique to the genre.
We’d love to see what Boyle and Garland have come up with for this next chapter of the franchise!
Would you like to see a third film in the film in this zombie franchise get made?
