After smashing global box-officers, Taika Waititi is now blowing up all over Hollywood thanks to the positive reception of Thor: Ragnarok. News has it that he’s currently in talks to adapt the live-action version of Akira, and Waititi says that he would prefer to base his adaptation on the manga instead of the anime.
When asked if he was interested in making the film, Waititi said: “I always felt like [Akira] was something that could do with a unique take. But, I don’t believe the world needs a remake of the anime, I think for me it would be, if there’s any real possibility for doing it, I would really just want to look at an adaptation of the books in a new way.”
With the Akira anime being such an influential cult classic, I have a feeling that there’s going to be a ton of backlash should Waititi choose to adapt the manga with his own version. Then again, when it comes to fanboys, you can’t really please everyone.
After seeing Ragnarok, Culturedemandsgeeks think Waititi’s best movies are the ones where he handles personal and human stories. Though the movie definitely had its laughs, I felt that the humor in Waititi’s older films had a lot more heart and a lot more clever humor.
