My two favourite directing siblings, Joel and Ethan Coen, best known for having one of the most impressive film resumes in Hollywood, are finally headed to TV with their first-ever miniseries. And who knows, that series might circle back around again and go to theaters.

You read that correctly, sources said The Ballad of Buster Scruggs–a limited Western anthology series based on an original idea and written by the two Coen Brothers–may be the subject of a theatrical and television release.

How that might look is unclear, since the project is still in its early stages. Plot details are sketchy at this moment of time, but we do know that it’ll combine six different storylines.

That’s a Coen Brother staple, with films such as Burn After Reading and the recent Hail, Caesar! utilizing multiple storylines to great effect. It also won’t be the duo’s first foray into Westerns, following up on True Grit and No Country for Old Men.

The reason for the format is due to its scope, which sources said would be too large for a feature film.

The Coen Brothers will be working with Megan Ellison and Annapurna Television’s president of television, Sue Naegle, who will executive produce the project. This is Annapurna’s first TV project, after producing and distributing a number of films including Her, Everybody Wants Some!!, and Sausage Party.

Buster Scruggs would be one of the first TV projects to crossover into theaters, but it wouldn’t be the first. It’s unclear how plans might develop, but there have been a number of efforts in recent years that have attempted to take on a multi-format release. Sherlock‘s holiday special The Abominable Bride had a short theatrical release.

It was also originally a plan for The Dark Tower series to release it in both theaters and on television, but now we’re getting one massive feature film.

No word yet on when The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will premiere, but Culturedemandsgeeks will keep you updated.
