from : DANTE-2946 –>Calling all Trekkies! Check out the main cast and the characters they’ll be playing in Netflix’s new Star Trek: Discovery series…

Star Trek: Discovery is the latest instalment in the long-running Star Trek franchise. It was back in September 1966 that we first saw Captain Kirk and Spock go “where no man has gone before” in the original series, called simply Star Trek but now known as Star Trek: The Original Series. Their cult voyage of discovery has since spawned seven series, a whopping 695 episodes and 13 movies.
Set 10 years prior to the original Star Trek, we’ll meet the crew of USS Shenzhou, part of the United Federation of Planets, who get locked into a cold war with the mighty Klingon, who are attempting to unite each of their 24 great Klingon houses.
If you’re not a Trekkie, this might all sound a tad confusing, but you won’t be alone, as the cast of Star Trek: Discovery are a combination of seasoned Trekkies and complete newcomers to the sci-fi phenomenon.

The U.S.S. Discovery has welcomed aboard its captain. CBS has just confirmed that Jason Isaacs will join its next Star Trek series as its captain — but don’t forget, for the first time in the TV series, the captain character is not the main star.
Isaacs will play Captain Lorca, the captain of the series’ main Federation starship, Discovery. But, as we’ve known for a while, Lorca won’t be the focus of the show: That will be his Number One…
Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham

Michael Burnham is the lead character in Star Trek: Discovery. She will be referred to as “Number One” which is a direct nod to the female character of the same name who only ever appeared in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Her character is linked to the legendary Mr Spock.“I can tell you that my parents died when I was very young and it happened at an Vulcan outpost and so I was commissioned into the home of Sarek and Amanda, who happen to be Spock’s parents. So essentially, Spock is my brother!”
You may recognise Sonequa from one of her many past television series, including Sasha Williams in The Walking Dead, Tamara in Once Upon a Time and as Courtney Well in The Good Wife.
Doug Jones as Lt. Saru

Doug Jones (features heavily in Guillermo del Toro films: including Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy and the TV show, Falling Skies. ) will be playing Lt. Saru, a member of an alien species new to the Star Trek universe known as the Kelpians.
Doug recently told the L.A Times:
“I’m a prey species. Where I come from, apparently, we are the ones who are eaten, hunted and farmed. I’m the first of my kind to rise above that and to have gone through Starfleet Academy and have become the high-ranking officer on a bridge of a Starfleet ship. I’m very accomplished for my type.”
Jones also let on that’s he a bit of a Trekkie himself, and was particularly mesmerised by The Original Series while growing up in the 1960s.
Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou

Michelle Yeoh will be playing Captain Philippa Georgiou and leading USS Shenzhou on its missions. Michelle doesn’t seem to be much of a Trekkie prior to taking the role, but she told CBS that she can’t wait to play Star Trek’s first Asian American female captain in the show, which is set 200 years into the future.
Michelle has also appeared in Marco Polo as Lotus, as Yu in 2016’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny and as Mameha in Memoirs of a Geisha – amongst various other television and movie roles.
Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets

Anthony Rapp will be playing Lt. Stamets – another first for the Star Trek entity as he’s the first openly gay character. Lt. Stamets is anastromycologist – a fungus expert – whose expertise will play a surprisingly important role in the central narrative arc of series one.
A self confessed nerd, Anthony has appeared in many popular television series including The Good Fight, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the X-Files. He’s had a longwithstanding theatre career, particularly well known for playing Mark Cohen in Rent on Broadway, in London’s West End an internationally.
Star Trek: Discovery is streaming ‘NOW’ on Netflix across the entire planet.
