When Warner Bros gave amateur filmmakers the go ahead to make a prequel film about Lord Voldemort, Potterheads were sent into a suitable frenzy.
Finally, six months after the first trailer for Voldemort: Origins Of The Heir dropped on YouTube, it’s been released in full – and it may well be the Harry Potter fix you’ve been waiting for, while the second installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise is not set for release until November.
The 52-minute prequel tells the story of Tom Riddle’s life before he became the Dark Lord, following Grisha MacLaggen and her quest to uncover the truth about whether he was involved in a murder, through a dramatic police investigation.

The film begins with Grisha, heir of Hogwarts founder Godric Gryffindor, being arrested and interrogated by a police officer, due to her ongoing hunt for Tom Riddle – whom she believes was involved in the death of a Hufflepuff relative.
The story then unfolds through a number of flashbacks, which is where a young Tom Riddle comes into it – and even though Grisha knows Riddle’s hunger for power, she tells her interrogators that she believes that he can be redeemed. Are you keeping up?
In June 2016, Warner Bros reached an agreement with Tryangle Films over the unofficial prequel, providing it is only released on YouTube ‘in a nonprofit way’, with Voldemort: Origins of The Heir director Director Gianmaria Pezzato confirmed to Polygon: “We had a private and confidential discussion with Warner Bros. who contacted us during the period of the crowdfunding campaign.
“The only thing we can say is that they let us proceed with the film, in a nonprofit way, obviously.”
He also went on to explain the inspiration behind the movie, adding: “We wondered, “What made Tom Riddle become Voldemort? What happened in those years, and what really went down at Hogwarts when he came back?”
“A lot goes unspoken. This is story we want to tell: The rise of the Dark Lord before Harry Potter and his first demise.”
So far, the unofficial prequel has received mixed reviews from fans, with some grateful for any kind of Harry Potter fix, while others were disappointed by the lack of continuity.
