Godzilla: King of the Monsters – Rodan, Mothra & Ghidorah Explained…

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is going to earn its grand title, with three classic Toho creatures – Rodan, Mothra & Ghidorah – making their Hollywood debut. In Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla, the nuclear lizard faced down against the M.U.T.O.s, an original creation for the Warner Bros/Legendary release. The sequel, however, is kicking things up a notch.

King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H Saturday — joined by stars Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Thomas Middleditch, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. — to unveil the stunning first trailer for the film, and in the process hinted that we could be in for more monsters than we thought.

We knew even before the footage was unveiled that the film would feature the iconic kaiju Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, in addition to the title monster, and the trailer did not disappoint us in that regard.

Now, we have no idea what he’s hinting at there, but let’s look at the possibilities for a second. The 2014 Godzilla film introduced a pair of brand new kaiju to the universe, so there’s always the chance the sequel could do that again.

Then there are also the countless foes from Godzilla’s past to consider. A lot of the trailer took place in or near water, so what about Ebirah? Could it be Anguirus? How about Hedorah?

Or, there’s still another exciting possibility: What if Kong shows up, even in a post-credits sequence, to set up the promised showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong? That’s not a stretch at all.

Now, though, we’ve got a proper look at the reimagining of these creatures in the first official trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Gojira is undoubtedly the star of the show (along with Millie Bobby Brown, once again taking on terrifying giant creatures), but what’s got everybody talking is the new MonsterVerse additions.

Whatever Dougherty and company have planned, we’ll find out for sure when Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters May 31, 2019.
