At the event of Phil Lord and Chris Miller getting fired from the Han Solo project, we take a look at Edgar Wright who’s exit from Marvel’s Ant-Man movie turned a lot of heads. Wright is currently out promoting his upcoming movie, Baby Driver, Variety has asked him about his previous run-in with Marvel.
Wright says:
“The most diplomatic answer is I wanted to make a Marvel movie but I don’t think they really wanted to make an Edgar Wright movie. I was the writer-director on it and then they wanted to do a draft without me, and having written all my other movies, that’s a tough thing to move forward. Suddenly becoming a director for hire on it, you’re sort of less emotionally invested and you start to wonder why you’re there, really.”
That’s a damn shame seeing that Wright has had a pretty solid tracklist of movies, and they all come with a good layer of depth and meticulousness that Wright is known for. Over time, Marvel has had a some changes in management, and loads of directors like James Gunn and Taika Waititi are praising Marvel for the creative freedom they have now.
When Wright quit the job, Peyton Reed was able to helm the movie, and he passed with flying colors. He’s now directing the sequel to Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and it will have Paul Rudd returning as Scott Lang and Evangeline Lilly putting on the Wasp suit as her character Hope Van Dyne.
I guess fans will just have to keep wondering what an Edgar Wright Ant-Man movie would have looked like. Hopefully he comes back to do another hero for Marvel.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is set to come out July 6, 2018 and you can catch Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver on June 28.
