When is it back on Netflix? Who’s in the cast? Everything we know so far

Black Mirror started out on Channel 4 but moved to the streaming service for season three, where it will be back for six new episodes soon. Here’s everything we know so far about the weird and wonderful worlds that we’ll be exploring when it returns.

When is Black Mirror season four available?

No release date has yet been announced for the new season, but we do know that there will be six episodes. In August, an advert said that they would be “coming soon”, so we’re guessing it will be sometime this autumn.

What are the new episodes about?

As usual with the series, details of each episode are being kept fairly hush hush, but a promo clip has been released which shows a montage of a clips from the series and the titles of each instalment.

Crocodile shows a secluded drive through a snowy, mountainous landscape, followed by Arkangel, a creepy looking tale involving a small girl being injected in the head.

Hang The DJ seems to tell the story of a couple on a date, before the ad cuts to USS Callister, which is set aboard a spaceship.

Metalhead looks like a classic horror story involving out-of-control machines, and the final episode, Black Museum, shows a woman making a trip to a mysterious exhibition and the strange things that happen afterwards.

Who is starring in this season?

It’ll come as no surprise that Black Mirror has again attracted some big names to its roll call of stars.

For season four, you can expect to see Breaking Bad star Jesse Plemons and The Wolf of Wall Street’s Cristin Milioti in USS Callister.

La La Land and Mad Men actress Rosemarie Dewitt stars in Arkangel, Birdman’s Andrea Riseborough is in Crocodile, and Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole features in Hang The DJ.

Maxine Peake stars in Metalhead and Douglas Hodge leads the cast for Black Museum, promising stand-out performances throughout the series.

Who has written and directed the new episodes?

Charlie Brooker has kept tight control of the series as the writer for every one of the six episodes, although he teamed up with previous Black Mirror writer William Bridges on USS Callister.

A stellar line-up of directors includes Hollywood superstar Jodie Foster for Arkangel and Peaky Blinders helmer Colm McCarthy for Black Museum.

Others taking turns behind the camera are The Sopranos and Game of Thrones director Tim Van Patten, and Doctor Who and Sherlock director Toby Haynes.

Will there be a sequel to San Junipero?

The episode entitled San Junipero was the pinnacle of previous series of Black Mirror, and went on to win two Emmys for Outstanding TV Movie and Best Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Drama.

The season three tale was surprisingly cheerful, offering a happy ending to the epic love story about two women who managed to find each other in any decade they landed in, and who signed up to spend eternity together with the help of a soul storage unit.

But fans have been speculating that the episode, which starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is ripe for a sequel because the virtual reality nature of the ending means that the story could take an entirely different direction.

Will Brooker have plans to return to his most successful episode? We’re not sure, but he told The Telegraph: “I’m terrified of San Junipero in a way, because I think we sort of captured lightning in a bottle there. You try and think, OK, that went really well, what else can we do?”
